Wat is het hormoon testosteron en wat doet het?
Testosteron is het mannelijke voortplantingshormoon. Zowel mannen als vrouwen maken testosteron aan, hoewel mannen het in veel hogere concentraties produceren. Bij mannen wordt testosteron aangemaakt in de teelballen en bijnieren, onder invloed van hormonen (LH en FSH) uit de hersenen. Testosteron zorgt bij zowel mannen als vrouwen voor haar- en spiermassaontwikkeling.
Normale testosteronwaardenDe normaalwaarden voor testosteron verschillen per laboratorium. Uiteraard verschillen de waarden ook sterk tussen mannen en vrouwen, waarbij geldt dat voor mannen veel hogere concentraties normaal zijn. Testosteronwaarden variëren per persoon maar over het algemeen wordt een testosteronwaarde tussen 12 en 35 nmol/l als normaal gezien en voor vrouwen tussen 0,5 en 3 nmol/l.
Wat zijn de symptomen van een testosterontekort en wat zijn de gevolgen?
Bij mannen kunnen een verandering in lichaamsbouw, verminderde spiermassa, toename in lichaamsvet en een verminderd libido symptomen zijn van een te lage testosteronwaarde. Daarnaast kunnen ook problemen met de erectie, subfertiliteit, vermoeidheid, stemmingswisselingen of depressie en borstontwikkeling hierop wijzen.

Waarom moet ik een bloedtest testosteron afnemen?
Zowel een te lage testosteronconcentratie als een te hoge testosteronconcentratie kunnen gezondheidsproblemen opleveren. Soms duiden ze op een onderliggende aandoening. Daarom is het verstandig af en toe je testosteron te meten door middel van een bloedtest.
Een te lage testosteronconcentratie wordt hypogonadisme genoemd. De oorzaak kan in twee categorieën worden onderverdeeld:
Een primaire oorzaak, waarbij het probleem gelegen is in de productie van testosteron zelf. Bijmannen dus een probleem in de teelballen (testis), bijvoorbeeld door een trauma aan de testis, ofeen tumor.
Een secundaire oorzaak, waarbij het probleem gelegen is in de hersenen en er een verminderdeaansturing is in de productie van testosteron, bijvoorbeeld door hersenschade of een tumor in dehersenen. Ook bepaalde syndromen kunnen hier de reden van zijn.
Daarnaast kunnen overgewicht en diabetes beide leiden tot een testosterontekort. Diabetes en overgewicht stimuleren namelijk de oestrogeenproductie. Dit remt de stimulatie vanuit de hersenen om testosteron aan te maken.
