Wat is cholesterol?

Zijn er waarschuwingssignalen van een hoog cholesterolgehalte? Wat zijn de meest voorkomende symptomen van een hoog cholesterolgehalte?
Een te hoog cholesterol geeft geen symptomen! Dat maakt het gevaarlijk en daarom is het zo belangrijk om het cholesterol zelf te meten. Ongemerkt kan het cholesterol veel te hoog zijn en bijdragen aan het risico op hart- en vaatziekten.
Een te hoog totaal cholesterol, een verlaagd HDL-cholesterol, een te hoog LDL-cholesterol, te hoge triglyceriden; ze dragen allemaal bij aan het risico op hart- en vaatziekten. Maar wat zijn precies hart- en vaatziekten en wat draagt nog meer bij aan het ontstaan van hart- en vaatziekten? En belangrijker, hoe kan het risico worden teruggedrongen?
Bij hart- en vaatziekten is er sprake van vernauwing van de vaten als gevolg van de plaques die in de vaten zijn ontstaan, ook wel aderverkalking of atherosclerose genoemd. Naast een te hoog cholesterol, zijn er nog vele andere factoren die de kwaliteit van de vaten kunnen aantasten en het risico op hart- en vaatziekten verhogen.
Risicofactoren die bijdragen aan hart- en vaatziekten zijn:
